Description
Queensbury Cottage is a small house located at Queensbury Lodge Stables, dating from the mid to late 18th century, though it may include elements from a late 17th century structure. The building was refronted, extended at the rear, and had a wash-house added in the early 19th century. In the mid 20th century, it was refitted internally and a porch was added at the rear. The exterior is constructed of red brick, which has been painted white, and features a plain tile end-gabled roof with two roof dormers at the rear that have cat-slide slate roofs. There is a projecting stack on each gable-end wall, and the lean-to addition at the rear has a pantile roof. The porch is timber-framed and glazed but is in a decayed condition.
The plan consists of a three-unit range facing the street, with an early 19th century lean-to range at the rear accessed through a 20th century projecting porch. The early 19th century wash-house has a hipped lean-to roof and is attached to the east gable-end wall. The main range is two storeys high, with a cellar and attic. The symmetrical front has three windows, an offset plinth, and a raised band at the first floor level. The ground floor features a central doorway with a mid 19th century four-panel door and a rectangular fanlight above, flanked by sash windows with gauged brick flat arches and timber lintels, each with a projecting stone sill. The first floor has three similar sash windows, all with two vertical glazing bars in each frame. At the rear, each roof dormer contains a pair of casement windows with glazing bars, featuring four panes by four panes. The interior has no visible features of interest, with a 20th century staircase, and access to the cellar is through a manhole under the stair cupboard, which was not inspected.
