Description
No. 50 Churchgate Street, located in Bury St Edmunds, is a building that was formerly part of The Golden Fleece Public House. It dates from the early 19th century, with a possible core from the 17th century. The structure is timber-framed and roughcast-rendered, featuring applied mock-timbering. It has a plaintiled roof with a plain eaves soffit.
The building stands two storeys tall and is adjacent to the return front of No. 62 College Street. It has a two-window range, with large-paned sash windows set in flush cased frames. To one side, there is a four-panelled door with a plain timber surround and a rectangular fanlight above it. At the rear, there is a higher range that extends at right angles to the front, featuring a hipped end to its roof that connects to the main roof's front slope.
Inside, there are no exposed 17th-century features. The principal room on the ground floor showcases 18th-century panelling and a fireplace surround. The rear range appears to be a 19th-century extension of the former inn premises.
