Description
53 and 54 Churchgate Street are a pair of semi-detached houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed of white brick, with the east gable wall rendered over and the facade of No. 54 painted. The houses feature slate roofs with a wide plain eaves cornice.
The exterior consists of two storeys, cellars, and attics, with a four-window arrangement that is organized as 1:2:1, where the two outer bays project slightly forward. The windows are sashes set in deep reveals with flat gauged arches. No. 53 has one blocked upper window and the remaining windows have a single vertical glazing-bar, while No. 54 features 12-pane sashes. A raised stone band runs below the first-storey windows. Each of the projecting outer bays has an entrance door with a plain semicircular-headed brick surround, plain reveals, a six-panel door with sunk moulded panels, and a fanlight with radial glazing-bars. There are also two lead-covered flat-headed dormers: No. 53 has a two-light casement window, and No. 54 has a six-pane sash window.
The interior has not been inspected. According to Thomas Warren's map of 1791, the plot where these houses are located was previously open garden ground.
