Description

The Water Mill and Mill House is a disused watermill and mill house dating from the 18th century. It stands three storeys tall with an attic, constructed from timber framing and weatherboarding, and features a slate roof. The east end has a lucam, and the building includes small-paned sash windows set in flush frames. Inside, there is a cast iron breast shot water-wheel and three pairs of underdriven stones. The machinery is largely intact, with the exception of the east iron stone nuts, which are made of wood. The timber supporting the base of the upright shaft is marked with 'I.Lowe - 1800', indicating the date of the machinery; John Lowe was the miller during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as noted in parish records at the Record Office in Bury St. Edmunds.

The Mill House, which is adjacent to the west side of the Watermill, dates from the early 17th century and has been altered over time. It is two storeys high, timber-framed, and plastered, with a red brick tumbled gable on the south side that is partly obscured by a later extension. The roof is covered with black glazed pantiles, and there is an internal chimney stack. The Mill House features late 19th-century casement windows with a single glazing bar, while the north gable facing the road has two small-paned sash windows in flush frames.
