Description
Nos. 7 and 9 on The Street are a pair of cottages that were originally built in the 16th century or early 17th century as a single house. They have undergone alterations and an extension in the 19th century. The cottages are one storey high with attics and feature a three-cell plan. They are constructed with a timber frame and plaster, topped with a thatched roof that includes eyebrow casement dormers. A central chimney made of gault brick serves the building. The windows are small-pane casements from the 19th century, and there is a boarded entrance door. A rear extension made of flint rubble with brick quoins was added in the 19th century. Inside, the central chimney has back-to-back fireplaces serving the hall and parlour, both of which have been infilled. However, the hall fireplace retains an exposed cambered lintel with trailing-leaf carving typical of the early 16th century. Other exposed framing in the building suggests a later 16th-century date, and the lintel may have been reused.
