Description

The Dome Sports Centre is a 20th-century building made of concrete with steel reinforcement. The attached reception building is constructed from steel and concrete block, topped with a corrugated-steel roof.

The main space of the centre is circular, featuring an additional arc-shaped section that curves around approximately 90 degrees on the eastern side, along with a rectangular area to the north for the reception building.

The exterior showcases a white concrete dome that stands 11 metres high and has a diameter of 36 metres. The outer surface is finished with a waterproof liquid-applied elastomeric membrane. At the top, there is a central opening covered by a three-metre ventilation cowl, which was used for feeding vibrator cables during the concrete setting process. Surrounding the base of the dome is a drainage channel and grill adjacent to the original ring-beam. The building features sets of double doors at four equidistant points around its exterior and has two air ducts mounted on the northern side of the roof.

On the east side, there is a curved section that includes flat-roofed squash courts as part of the original design, along with a concrete and glass section shaped like two unequal triangles leaning against each other.

Inside, the main gymnasium space utilizes the full height of the dome and occupies most of the interior. At the north and south edges, there are two-storey blocks made of concrete block, which contain smaller rooms. Access to the upper floor of each block is provided by a stair at the western end. The curved outer sector leads to a pair of squash courts, and at its northern end, it connects to the reception extension.
