Description
Paradise Farmhouse is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from around 1500. It is a 3-cell Wealden-type house of unusually high quality, standing two storeys tall. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring wide cells at either end with upper floors that jet out at the front, supported by brackets. The eaves above the hall also oversail and have large windows held up by brackets with carved spandrels. The roof is plaintiled, with central and end chimneys made of red brick. Most of the windows are 20th-century oak-mullioned, some of which have been inserted into original openings. The entrance door, dating from the early 19th century, has six panels and is partly glazed.
The cross-passage entrance is located within the service end, featuring original short plank-and-muntin screens with carved brackets supporting the top rail. These screens were later converted into a screen with two arched doorways that also have carved spandrels. The first-floor structure over the hall is richly carved, showcasing cresting, crenellation, and trailing leaves, while the common joists display double-ogee moulding. Above the hall is a two-bay roof with an octagonal crownpost. The high quality of the original workmanship suggests that the house may have been built for a special purpose.
