Description

The Bull Inn is an inn that dates from the late 17th century, with extensions from the early 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The building has two storeys and attics.

From the east, the inn features a three-window range on the right side that is late 17th century, with a slightly later three-window range on the left. A carriage entrance is located between these two ranges. The walls are made of narrow red bricks that have been later painted, with a string course at the first floor. The gables have parapets with corbelled kneelers; the gable at the north end is of Flemish type, featuring a semi-circular head. The roof is plaintiled, with central and gabled chimneys made of red brick, one of which has been repaired in gault brick. The hipped dormers from the 18th century have plaintiled roofs, deep moulded eaves cornices, and small-pane casements.

The windows are wooden, with mullions and transoms from the 18th century, and flat arches made of gauged brick. Central to the right-hand range is an 18th-century doorway that has a large oblong fanlight with radial glazing bars, leading to a 20th-century glazed panelled door.

At the rear of the right-hand range, there is a notable 17th-century staircase that spans three floors, featuring turned urn-shaped balusters and heavy moulded strings, with square newels topped by ball cap finials. The staircase in the left-hand range, which is from the early 18th century, has fretted splat-balusters. In the two-storey 20th-century south rear range, there is a fireplace that has a reset late 16th-century carved oak surround and overmantel, with flanking carved figures of unusual quality.
