Description
The Herringswell War Memorial is a pillar memorial built in 1920, made from grey granite. It is located on a triangular patch of grass at a road junction to the west of the village, about 180 meters north-west of the Church of St Ethelbert, which is a Grade II* listed building.
The memorial features a large, roughly-hewn pillar with a sloping head, set on a substantial plinth and a concrete base. It stands approximately 2.4 meters tall. One side of the pillar has a finely-hewn panel with leaded lettering that reads: "THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918. / IN HONOURED MEMORY OF / (NAMES) / 'LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND / WE FOR ENGLAND DIED.' / ALSO / (NAME) / 1939-1945 / (NAMES) / MAN’S INHUMANITY TO MAN / MAKES COUNTLESS THOUSANDS / MOURN."
