Description

Tuddenham Watermill is a watermill that has been converted into a restaurant. It was built in the early 19th century, extended in the mid-19th century, and refurbished in the 20th century. The structure is timber framed and weatherboarded, with the ground floor made of brick and flint. The mill was extended westwards in two stages during the 19th century using gault brick, featuring a weatherboarded gable and a pantile roof. The building stands two to three storeys high, with a vault on the roadside elevation and a single-storey engine house and chimney at the rear.

On the north elevation, there is scattered fenestration with 20th-century timber casements and some blocked openings. The original part of the mill is three storeys tall, while the mid-19th-century brick addition is two storeys. The south elevation also has scattered fenestration with 20th-century timber casements in altered openings. The engine house, which has been gutted, was formerly part of the restaurant. The gault brick chimney is square in plan and tapers above a brick band, with another brick band at the neck.

Inside, part of the frame has been replaced and an upper floor has been inserted. The mill features machinery, including a cast iron breast shot waterwheel that is 14 feet 8 inches in diameter. It has a cast iron wheelshaft and pitwheel, with wooden cogs and a cast iron wallower mounted at the base of a wooden upright shaft; currently, the wheel is out of mesh. The spurwheel is of older wooden compass-arm construction, with spokes secured to the upright shaft by passing through it. The millstones are driven by cast iron stone nuts and are currently raised out of gear. There is also a wooden crown wheel, made in the same compass arm style, and an iron layshaft for a sack hoist. An adjusting arm has been repositioned against the outer wall. The mill is included in the register for its group value only.
