Description
Nos. 8-11 College Street is a terrace of four houses, originally known as the William Barnaby Almshouses, built in 1826 and rebuilt by William Steggles on the site of a 16th-century foundation. Designed in Tudor style, the front is made of white brick with stone quoins and dressings, while the rear is constructed of red brick. The slate roofs feature a brick dentil cornice.
The building has two storeys and an eight-window range arranged in a 3:2:3 pattern. The center section projects slightly and is topped with a brick dentil pediment that has a plaque inscribed 'Given by William Barnaby 1571 Rebuilt 1826'. The windows are all Tudor-style 2-light casements with ornate leaded panes, arched heads, stone mullions, and dripmoulds. A raised stone band runs between the first and ground storeys.
There are four recessed doors spaced across the front, each with stone dripmoulds and chamfered brick reveals. No. 8 features three stone steps, while No. 9 has two steps. The doors are four-panel designs with two leaves, and the upper panels have applied mouldings that match the window tracery. The building has two end chimney-stacks and three internal chimney-stacks with plain rectangular shafts.
The fenestration on the rear wall consists of 20th-century replacements, including small-paned windows with intersecting Gothick-style tracery and ogee heads. Originally intended for eight women and eight men, these almshouses were sold and used as a builders' merchants warehouse from 1954 until 1978. They were restored as four privately-owned houses in 1980 and 1981.
