Description
No. 4 Hatter Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with living accommodation above. It dates from the early 19th century and features painted brickwork, a parapet, and a heavy stucco cornice, topped with a slate roof.
The building stands three storeys tall and has a four-window arrangement, with three windows on the first storey and one on the top storey. The first-storey windows are 12-pane sashes set in plain reveals, while the top-storey windows are 9-pane sashes. A raised stone band runs along the window-sill level of the first storey. The ground-storey windows are rounded bows, characteristic of early 19th-century design.
The central doorway is framed by a wooden doorcase with fluted pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice hood, and it features a glazed 20th-century door. The south end of the building slightly projects forward and is accented with chamfered stone quoins at the ground storey and stone pilasters on the upper storeys. This end contains the original entrance, which is a recessed six-panelled door with two leaves. The doorcase here has recessed columns and is topped with a segmental-headed fanlight that has radial glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected.
