Description
Langton House is a house that now contains two shops on the ground floor but was formerly a girls' boarding school. It dates from the early 19th century, although it has an earlier core. The building is timber-framed and faced in white brick, topped with a pantiled roof that features a plain parapet and a brick dentil cornice.
The exterior has two storeys and attics, with a five-window range consisting of 12-pane sashes set in plain reveals, featuring flat gauged arches and projecting stone sills. There are two flat-headed dormers in the roof, which have 20th-century casement windows. The central doorcase has panelled reveals, panelled pilasters, and an open pediment. It includes a 20th-century door with a semicircular fanlight, flanked by two early 20th-century double shop fronts with recessed central entries. At the back, there is a 17th-century two-storey rear wing that has an internal chimney-stack with a blank recessed panel at the base.
Inside, there is little remaining, but there is a 19th-century staircase with turned balusters, a plain handrail, open strings, and applied bracketing.
