Description
This is a house located at 61 Guildhall Street in Bury St Edmunds, with an early 18th-century front and likely a late 17th-century core. It is timber-framed and features raised rectangular roughcast panels. The roof is covered with old plain tiles and has a wooden cornice with modillions.
The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a one-bay front range, a small wing, and a 20th-century extension at the rear. There is one window on each storey, with sash windows in flush moulded and cased frames; the first storey has 16 panes, while the ground storey has a deeper 12-pane window. The entrance features a recessed six-panel door set in a wooden surround with plain reveals, pilasters, and a flat cornice hood.
Inside, there is a small cellar lined with flint and brick. The front range includes an exposed main beam and a small corner fireplace with a surround dating from around 1840. The rear wall has been removed, creating a single room on the ground storey. The south side wall is rendered but is said to be made of very large flints and contains two wide semicircular-headed alcoves, one on each storey. The attics are plastered.
