Description
Newmarket War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with alterations made after the Second World War. It is made of granite and is located within the memorial gardens on Bury Road in Newmarket. The memorial features a tall square granite column topped with a carved urn that has an eternal flame pinnacle and decorative swags. Two faces of the column are adorned with carved wreaths and swords. The column stands on a square plinth with scroll-shaped brackets at each corner, which is set on a three-stepped base that displays open books on each face.
The main dedicatory inscription is on the front face of the column, stating: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NEWMARKET WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 & 1939 - 1945." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the faces of the plinth and the four books.
