Description

No. 36 The Street is a house that likely dates back to the 14th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. It has one-and-a-half storeys and attics, and is a small aisled hall house consisting of two cells. The hall has two bays and is aisled at the rear, with unclear evidence of a second aisle at the front. The building has undergone significant changes over time.

It features three windows and is constructed with timber framing and rendering. The roof is thatched, with gabled dormers that have plain tiled roofs, and 18th-century iron casements with diamond leaded lights. There are gable and axial chimneys made of red brick. The windows from the 18th and 19th centuries are two-light windows with iron casements and leaded lights. The entrance door is boarded and battened.

Visible elements from the 14th-century structure include an arcade post from an open truss, which is trenched for a passing-brace; an arcade-plate that is notably slender and of poor quality, featuring two open lap-joints for doubled arcade-braces; and an arcade post from a closed truss with mortices for tie-beam and arcade-plate bracing, along with a section of aisle wall-plate. The upper bay of the hall was likely floored in the 16th century. A chimney was inserted into the service cell, and the rest of the hall was floored over in the 17th or early 18th century. The roof was almost entirely rebuilt in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the house was divided into three cottages. This building is a rare but fragmentary example of an aisled hall house at a low social level.
