Description
Membury House and adjoining premises is an 18th-century red brick house featuring an early 19th-century white brick front that has a parapet and a stucco cornice, which is now painted. The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars, with a four-window range of double-hung sashes that include glazing bars set in plain reveals, topped with cornice lintels on stub brackets. The ground storey features one three-light window and a 19th-century shop front with glazing bars, pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. There are two six-panel doors with wooden doorcases that have pilasters and cornices. The roof is tiled and includes three dormers—two early 19th-century segmental-headed and one from the 20th century—along with two heavy white brick chimney stacks that have square shafts. This building is part of a group of listed buildings in Well Lane, which includes Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive) and No 31 Church Street, as well as all the listed buildings in Market Hill, Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive) Malting Lane, Stone Hall, and Nos 36 to 40 (consecutive) Nethergate Street, and all the listed buildings in Station Road.
