Description
Grey Cottage is a house dating from the mid-17th century. It has one-and-a-half storeys and a three-cell plan. The building is timber-framed and rendered, featuring 20th-century pargetting with a comb pattern in panels. It has a thatched roof and an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The ground storey has three-light casement windows, some of which contain 18th-century square-leaded panes. There are three gabled dormers, each with two-light casement windows. A mid-20th-century enclosed gabled porch features a reused six-panelled door. Above the door, there is an old fire insurance sign depicting an elephant and castle, which has been reset from above the original front door. Inside, the timbers are exposed, showcasing framing with primary braces and bisected studs, with many of the main timbers being reused. Notably, there are no tie-beams linking the tops of the intermediate posts, and the service end of the house is still divided into two.
