Description
Shrubland Lodge is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 19th centuries. It features a three-cell, cross-passage entrance plan and stands two storeys high with attics. The building has four windows and is constructed from timber framing, rendered with scratched oblong ashlar panels. The roof is a 19th-century gambrel style, covered with slate and featuring dentil eaves. It has axial and gable chimneys made of gault brick, as well as flat-headed dormers fitted with sash windows. The small pane sash windows are complemented by French doors, a two-storey splayed bay, and a verandah with a swept hipped zinc roof supported by iron columns, all of which were added in the mid-19th century. The entrance door, which has six panels, dates to around 1800. Originally, it was likely a three-cell open hall house, but the hall was floored over and a chimney was inserted backing onto the cross-passage in the 16th century. A parlour chimney and a rear wing were added in the 16th or 17th century. The 19th-century alterations included a complete replacement of the roof.
