Description

78 St John's Street is a house that has been adapted into a single shop with storage above. It has an early 16th century core, with 19th century additions at the front and rear, now integrated into a long 20th century extension. The building features part timber-framing and was formerly jettied, with a façade made of white brick and a steeply-pitched slate roof that has wide plain eaves.

The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, with a three-window range. The windows are sashes in flush cased frames, with the two outer windows originally having 16 panes and the center window having 12 panes, though the upper lights have been replaced with top-opening versions. The ground storey has a pair of similar 19th century shop fronts, each featuring a recessed half-glazed entrance door on one side, along with a heavy projecting fascia supported by ornate console brackets and a blind box. There are also two flat-headed lead-covered dormers that contain 2-light 4-pane casements.

Inside, the ground storey is divided into two long bays, which were previously separated by a partition wall and doorway. The front half of the ceiling on each side is exposed, showcasing plain heavy joists that are closely spaced and set flat, although the remaining joists have been replaced. On the left side, the main beam has a wide chamfer and cut-off stops, while the cross beam in the north end wall lacks pegging for studs, suggesting that the frame may have originally extended for another bay. On the right side, the main beam features double ogee mouldings. There is no exposed framing on the upper storey, and the roof timbers have been replaced in the 19th and 20th centuries.
