Description

Batt House is a house that now serves as the YMCA and has been divided into 14 bedsits. It dates from the early and later 19th century, with a fragmentary earlier core. The front is made of white brick, while the sides and rear are red brick, topped with a slate roof featuring a moulded wood cornice.

The building has three storeys and a cellar, consisting of two parallel ranges from the 19th century that were built at different times. There is an extension in a matching style on the east side and a small rendered single-storey section on the west with a tiled hipped roof. The main front has three windows, all of which are sashes set in plain reveals with flat gauged arches. The ground and first storeys have 16-pane sashes, while the second storey has 8-pane sashes. The east extension features a single narrow sash window on each storey.

The entrance is through a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, located within the west extension. It has a wood doorcase with pilasters and a dentil cornice. Inside, there are extensive cellars, with the rear featuring flint and stone walling and a brick vaulted ceiling. Only two main beams of the timber frame are exposed. There is also an early 19th-century winder stair that rises to the top storey, complete with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.
