Description

Scoles Gate is a house dating from around 1500, with alterations and extensions from the 17th century and later. It features a rendered and colourwashed timber frame with a pantiled roof, one end of which is half-hipped. The house has brick ridge and side stacks. Originally, it was likely a two-unit open hall house, with a third unit rebuilt or added in the 17th century. The structure is single storey with two attics and two storeys overall.

The front facing the road has a projecting lean-to on the right with a door, and another lean-to on the left with a three-light casement window. There are two Lincolnshire dormers above. The right end has 20th-century casements, while the left end features a three-light casement on each floor. The front facing the garden has a door with a three-light casement and a 20th-century conservatory to the left, along with a projecting stack on the right and a two-light dormer above.

Inside, much of the tall panel framing is visible, along with chamfered bridging beams and wide joists. The wall posts are jowled, and there are back-to-back open fireplaces with bressumers and a stack that was probably inserted in the 17th century when the west bay was built or rebuilt. The flooring includes wide floorboards in parts and plank doors. The roof in the earlier section has rafters of heavy scantling, and an early window frame is visible in the east ground floor room. Scoles Gate showcases two main building periods from around 1500 and the 17th century, with comparatively little alteration since.
