Description
The Blackbirds is a house that was formerly a public house, dating from the early 18th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, with the north gable wall roughcast. The building features a mansard roof covered with dark plain tiles alternating with bands of fishscale tiles, and has a decorated ridge. There are two internal chimney-stacks with tall plain red brick shafts.
The exterior has two storeys, cellars, and attics, with a two-window range consisting of sashes in flush cased frames that have a single vertical bar in the lights. There are two flat-headed lead-covered dormers, each with two-light 4-pane casement windows. The ground storey has two flat-headed canted bays with sash windows that also have a single vertical bar and diminished side lights. The central entrance is accessed by steps and features a doorcase with reeded pilasters and a plain architrave, along with a four-panelled door that has two leaves. There are later extensions at the rear.
Inside, the ground storey has very small chamfered main beams exposed, and some widely spaced framing is visible on the south side wall. In the upper rear wall, there are two original two-light casement windows with square leading and ornate catches. The attics are plastered.
