Description

West Mill is a house and attached steam mill located in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the early 19th century, with late 19th century extensions to the house. The house features a timber frame and is rendered, topped with a double-gabled slate roof.

The exterior is two storeys high, with pierced and shaped bargeboards on the shallow gables and a small single-storey extension on the left side of the front, all adorned with pendants that terminate in open lanterns. The front has a range of four windows, consisting of 9-pane sashes in flush cased frames. The ground storey has various window types: two sashes with a single vertical bar in the lights, one inserted flat-roofed canted three-light bay, and one late 20th century window with plate glass. The entrance features a half-glazed door with a 19th century latticed timber porch. Originally, the entrance door was located on the north side but was moved when the house was extended to the northwest.

The mill, which is now disused, was built in 1846 and is constructed of red brick with a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall in an L-shaped form, with a projecting gabled wing that has a small-paned fixed window on each storey, although the top window is blocked. The gable features a roundel inscribed with "W+O 1846." The entrance door is located at the splayed northeast angle, with another door positioned above it.
