Description
The Village Hall is a former village school, now serving as a village hall. It was built in 1873 at the expense of Robert Emlyn Lofft of Troston Hall and is designed in a Gothic style. The building features moulded and decorated bricks made in the parish, consisting of four courses of red bricks with a roll-moulded surface, and one course with black glazing and an indented pattern. It has rusticated quoins and dressings in black brick, while the window surrounds have been painted over with later render. The roof is covered with clay plain tiles and retains remnants of bands of fishscale tiles.
The building is aligned north-south, with the south end showcasing two 2-light windows with heavy pointed surrounds flanking a central door that has a narrow pointed arch, along with a circular window in the gable. The north end has similar windows. The longer east and west sides each feature two 3-light windows in the same Gothic style. On the east side, there is a small rounded projection with a conical roof that was designed to contain a tortoise stove, which has since been removed. A similar projection on the west side, intended for the main entry, has also been removed, and the opening has been infilled with a 20th-century door.
The interior was designed as one large open classroom and retains all its original shelves, which are set into rounded alcoves in the walls.
