Description

TL 87 SE TROSTON THE STREET (WEST SIDE)

2/65 The Village Hall -

GV II

Former village school, now used as a village hall. Built 1873, at the expense of Robert Emlyn Lofft of Troston Hall, in Gothic style. In moulded and decorated bricks made in the parish: 4 courses of red bricks with a roll- moulded surface, and one course with black glazing and an indented pattern: rusticated quoins and dressings in black brick: window surrounds painted over later render. Roof of clay plaintiles, with the remains of bands of fishscale tiles. Aligned north-south, the south end has 2 2-light windows with heavy pointed surrounds flanking a central door with a narrow pointed arch: a circular window in the gable. Similar windows at the north end. The longer east and west sides have each 2 3-light windows in the same Gothic style. On the east, a small rounded projection with conical roof, designed to contain a tortoise stove, now removed. A corresponding similar projection on the west for the main entry has been removed, and the opening infilled, with a C20 door. The interior, designed as one large open classroom, retains all its original shelves, set into rounded alcoves in the walls.
