Description

West Gate Lodge to Dalham Hall, along with its gates, piers, and walling, was built around 1900 in the Queen Anne Revival Style. This gate lodge is a single-storey structure with an irregular plan, constructed from red brick featuring lighter red quoins and bands of plaintiles arranged in a herringbone pattern. The limestone block quoins add to its architectural detail. The narrow bricks, approximately 5 centimeters wide, support plaintiled roofs that are hipped, with a gable at the entrance. A central chimney features four tall attached square flues made of red brick, accented with limestone bands and moulded caps.

The windows consist of small-pane casements, some equipped with hinged panelled shutters, set beneath flat arches made of gauged brick and limestone, with raised aprons below the cills. The entrance doorway is particularly striking, made of limestone with a shouldered architrave and a scrolled pediment resting on carved console brackets. The pediment displays a carved coat of arms in relief. The entrance features a pair of doors, each with four fielded panels.

The lodge is flanked by a pair of wrought iron carriage gates mounted on heavy piers of red brick, which have limestone banding and a moulded limestone base and capping. On either side, there are pedestrian gateways and additional piers. Above the gateways, brick arches are topped with gabled limestone coping. Each side is bordered by elliptical screen walls of red brick, also featuring herringbone plaintiling, moulded limestone coping, and terminal piers. All piers are topped with statues of mythical creatures. Centrally located in the screen walls is a niche with a circular head made of gauged brick, set within a square frame.
