Description

The Guildhall of St Mary, now used as offices and a shop, is a late 15th-century building, likely constructed for John Upson. It was rebuilt in 1875 by JK Colling to serve as the headmaster's house for the nearby Eye Grammar School until 1965. The structure features a timber frame and machine tile roofs, with a nearly rectangular plan and a short extension to the west.

The building has two storeys and an attic, with the west gable-end facing the street. The exterior displays exposed close studding throughout, and the first floor jetties out to the south and west. The south side has five two- and three-light casements on the ground floor and four on the first floor, three of which are transformed into oriel windows with heavily carved aprons. The gabled roof is adorned with a decorative clustered ridge stack and an internal gable-end stack on the east side. The west gable features a four-light casement on the ground floor and an oriel window above, fitted with single-light leaded casements and a hipped plaintile roof. An attic casement with three lights is also present. The brattished jetty bressumer and attic wall plate add to the character. Notably, the south-west corner post has a weathered 15th-century carved figure of the Archangel Gabriel, and the south flank retains two four-centred window heads with carved spandrels. All other timber elements are from the 1875 reconstruction.

The interior includes heavy hollow-moulded tie beams supported by arched braces, which are also hollow-moulded. The layout reflects the 1875 alterations.
