Description

Carter's Cottage at Carter's Farm is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates back to around 1600 and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with a plastered exterior and a thatched roof. It has a three-cell cross passage plan and stands two storeys high. The original cross passage entrance on the right side is now blocked, with new entrances located at the far right in a service bay and as a lobby entrance to the left of centre. The windows include a mix of 19th and 20th-century glazing bar casements, with an early four-light diamond mullioned window reopened on the first floor above the hall, along with 20th-century dormers. A rebuilt ridge stack is situated between the hall and the parlour to the left of centre. The left gable end features a pentice board, with exposed plates and purlins. There is a short 20th-century gabled wing at the rear left, and the right end has a one-storey clay lump outshut with a pantiled roof, an attic two-light casement, and exposed plates and purlins. An external stack has been added to the rear of the service bay. Inside, some close studding is exposed, along with a stop-chamfered cross axial binding beam in the hall, stop-chamfered joists in the parlour, and removed arched braces to cambered tie beams, with cambered collars clasping the purlins.
