Description
The Granary, located approximately 50 meters north of Iron Gates and Lavender Cottage in Eye, is an animal shelter with a hay loft dating from around 1730. It features a timber frame with partly rendered and colourwashed wattle and daub infill, and has a pantile roof.
The exterior includes a brick plinth and a south front with a central late 19th-century stable door. The south and west walls have late 20th-century cement render. The west side has a loading door to the attic, while the east side features a 19th-century timber lean-to. The rear (north) elevation shows exposed framing and has one inserted late 19th-century plank door.
Inside, the structure retains an intact frame with four principal studs on sole plates, secondary studs, and a middle rail on the west wall that once supported ceiling joists. There is one 18th-century chamfered bridging beam to the east of the entrance, which was raised when the ceiling clearance was altered in the late 19th century. The west bridging beam and several joists were renewed in the late 19th century. The roof consists of secondary rafters with plank collars (one of four surviving) and one tier of clasped purlins.
