Description
This is a barn located 250 meters southwest of Athelington Hall, dating from the 17th century. The barn is divided into two sections: the eastern part consists of three bays from the early 17th century, while the western part has two higher bays from the later 17th century. It is timber framed and covered with weatherboarding and a corrugated iron roof.
The earlier section features full-height studs with smaller studs added later. It originally had an upper floor, of which one floor beam remains, while another has been cut through. These beams are braced to the wallposts above with later knee braces. The tie beams have been removed, and two of the trusses show evidence of lap-joints on the wallposts, likely for tie beam braces. The roof is intact and includes one row of clasped purlins.
The later section has full-height studs with primary braces, and the bay next to the earlier part serves as the cart entrance. This section also has a clasped-purlin roof. The structure of the easternmost bay of the barn was not visible at the time of the survey.
