Description
Scotch Farmhouse is a Grade II listed farmhouse located in Wetheringsett-Cum-Brockford. It consists of two sections: the left part dates from the early 16th century and features a late 16th-century inserted stack, while the right side was built around 1700 to replace earlier medieval work. The building is timber framed, rendered, and has a thatched roof. It is composed of two cells and has two storeys. The mid-20th-century windows are standard casements without glazing bars. The entrance is through a one-storey gabled porch with a standard panelled door, and the stack has a rendered axial shaft.
Inside, the earlier section includes a two-bay parlour block, with the inserted stack taking up most of one bay. The ceiling features closely-set chamfered joists with matchboarding in between. The studding is mostly concealed, except in the end gable where it is heavy and closely spaced. The roof has a plain crown-post design with two-way bracing to the collar purlin and a central cambered tie beam that appears to be raised. There is an open fireplace in the ground floor room, with one jamb rebuilt and part of the stack made of unfired brick. The later section has framing of poorer quality, with small flat joists in the lower ceiling and a clasped-purlin roof that incorporates a few sooted medieval timbers. A newel stair is located in front of the stack.
