Description
Moat Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with an early 17th-century cross-wing added to the left. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with a plain tiled roof. It comprises two main ranges, two storeys, and an attic. The cross-wing has a projecting gable, with the wall-plate ends supported by solid brackets. The windows are varied, a mixture of casements and small-paned sashes. An ovolo-mullioned window from the early 17th century is situated above the entrance, which has a gabled porch with a six-panel raised and fielded door, the upper two panels being glazed. There is an internal stack with a rendered shaft. A lean-to addition is attached to the side wall of the wing. The interior shows evidence of 16th-century work; it originally extended to the right but not to the left, where a gable window once existed against the present stack. Much of the framework in this area is concealed. A roll-moulded ceiling beam is present in the lower room, while the upper ceiling incorporates a reused roll-moulded beam. The wing has plain first-floor studding without visible bracing. Within the lean-to addition, a projecting moulded sill from a large upper window is visible in what was formerly an external wall. On the ground floor of the wing, an ovolo-moulded ceiling beam with nicked stops is present. The roof over the wing is intact, featuring clasped and butt purlins with wind bracing.
