Description
No. 4 Cross Street is a house dating from the early 17th century. It features a rendered and colourwashed timber frame and a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and a two-window range. To the right, there is a half-glazed 20th-century door and a three-bay shop front with multiple glazing bars, plain pilasters, and a continuous hood. To the left, there is a fixed window with nine panes. On the first floor, there are two unhorned sash windows, each with three over six panes. A stack is located to the north, shared with the adjoining premises.
Inside, the timber frame has moderate scantling, with jowled principal posts and one visible tension brace. There is a wide brick fireplace on the ground floor that incorporates re-used ashlar in the right-hand jamb. The interior also features heavy chamfered bridging beams and plain joists.
