Description
The Homeland is a house dating from the early to mid 16th century, with extensions made around 1600 and later. It features a cross-wing that is attached to and was formerly part of the adjacent Holbeck House. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with the upper floor of the wing originally jettied on two adjacent sides; a small section remains unaltered and exposed. The roofs are covered with plaintiles and have axial and external chimneys made of red brick. The house has two storeys and attics, with 19th-century small-pane sash windows. The ground floor windows also have hinged panelled shutters. The entrance door has six panels and a shallow oblong fanlight above it. Inside, the house includes the cross-passage of a 15th-century open hall, which is now mostly within Holbeck House. The service cell was demolished, and the current forward-projecting cross-wing was built in the mid 16th century. The front room features ogee-moulded main beams and a four-centred arched external doorway. The roof has a plain crownpost and good arch-braced close-studding. The range was extended to the rear around 1600, and an additional wing was added to the left in the 18th century.
