Description

Holbeck House is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century and later. It is primarily a three-cell open hall house, with part of it now incorporated into the adjoining house known as The Homeland. The building features a timber frame that is pebble-dashed, and it has a plaintiled roof with one gabled casement dormer. There is an axial chimney made of red brick. The house has two storeys and attics, with 19th and 20th-century casements, most of which have small panes. A 20th-century lean-to entrance porch with a boarded door is also present.

Inside, the central two-bay open hall showcases an open crown-post truss. A cambered tie beam supports a chamfered square crown-post with four-way braces. Although the deep arch-braces beneath the tie-beam that met at the center have been removed, the wall-posts below still retain polygonal shafts. At the high end of the hall, there is a blocked two-centred arched doorway leading into the parlour cell, which features an original massive upper floor. The building displays good arch-braced close studding and other exposed framing. In the 16th or early 17th century, a wide hall fireplace was constructed, backing onto the cross-passage, which is now part of the adjoining house. Next to the fireplace, there is an internal window with 17th-century splat balusters. An upper floor with on-edge joists was added to the hall in the 17th century. Local tradition suggests that the house is built on the site of a small cell of Cistercian nuns founded in 1220 near the Church of St. Mary.
