Description

Manor Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse, possibly built around 1655 for John Deyne, a doctor. Originally a 3-cell house with a cross-passage entry, the parlour cell was demolished in the 19th century. The house is timber-framed and plastered, featuring 19th-century cable-pattern pargetting in panels. The roof is tiled and has 19th-century dormers. An original brick chimney, serving the hall and parlour, is located on the left side, with four octagonal flues and moulded bases. A similar two-flue brick chimney is at the rear of the service wing though its shaft has been rebuilt. The windows are 3-light casements with transoms, some originating from the 18th century but remodelled in the early 20th century, with leaded lights. A mid-19th century entrance porch with a flat roof and a 4-panelled door has been added. Original features include close studding, ovolo-moulded main beams, and an ovolo-moulded arched fireplace in the hall. Some moulded plasterwork from the 17th or early 18th century is visible in the ceilings of the first storey. The house was formerly known as Jourdaines, named after William de Jourdaine, around 1450.
