Description

Oaksmere is a hotel that was formerly a rectory, substantially rebuilt between 1849 and 1850 for Reverend George Paterson, while incorporating earlier work from the 16th century to the north. The building has a complex plan featuring a two-span main range with flanking wings. It is constructed of stucco on brick, with the 16th-century wing being timber framed and displaying exposed studding on the front gable end. The roof is covered with mid-20th century concrete plain tiles and features ridge tiles along with ornamental bargeboards topped with spike finials.

The structure stands two storeys tall with attics. The older section includes early 19th-century casement windows with trefoil-headed lights and sunk spandrels, while the mid-19th-century section features small-paned sash windows with one and two lights. A gabled porch contains a four-centre arched four-panel door, which is divided into two leaves, with spandrels carved with vine foliage. Above the doorway is a lozenge panel decorated with a tile design. There is also a mid-19th-century conservatory on the left return of the building.

The property has four stacks with groups of detached flues, embellished with Tudor-style moulded brick ornament. Inside the 16th-century wing, there is a ceiling with moulded beams and joists, and the upper floor showcases some fine close studding. The rear portion of this wing has undergone significant alterations and has been re-roofed. A mid-19th-century well stair features twisted balusters, chamfered square newels with Jacobean-style pierced finials, and a ramped handrail. Some Gothic-style woodwork includes panels of stained glass, and around the ceiling and lantern of the stairwell, there is a series of mottoes.
