Description
Oak Cottage is a house located on Brome Rectory Road. The right-hand section of the building is likely medieval, featuring an inserted ceiling from the 18th century. There is a 16th-century single-cell addition that is set slightly forward to the left, characterized by higher eaves and a less steeply pitched roof. This 16th-century section was extended to the left in the mid-20th century. The structure is timber framed and plastered, with roofs that have double Roman tiles on the front slopes and pantiles on the rear, except for the mid-20th-century addition, which is entirely pantiled. The house has two storeys and small-paned casement windows. Inside, there is an internal stack located at the junction of the two ranges and a plank door at the rear. The interior has been modernized, revealing exposed framing. The 16th-century section features heavy reversed braces and shows evidence of diamond-mullioned windows on the first floor. Notably, the eaves of this part have been raised approximately 0.3 meters from the original wallplate.
