Description
The Wortham War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921, with additions made after the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, approximately 70 meters south of the church. The memorial stands about 4.8 meters tall and features an unadorned cross atop an octagonal, tapered shaft. This shaft is mounted on a square pedestal that has chamfered and carved corners, which rests on a deep, two-stepped plinth.
On the west face of the pedestal, there is an inscription that reads: IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE/ MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH/ ALSO/ 1939-1945/ (3 NAMES). The names of the 35 men who lost their lives in the First World War are engraved on the other three faces of the pedestal.
