Description

Thorpe Hall is a farmhouse dating to the 16th and early 17th centuries, located in Mendham Withersdale. It is timber-framed and rendered with a textured plaster, with a roof covered in concrete plain tiles. The building has a two-storey and attic layout, arranged in an L-shape. The main range originally comprised three cells, with a slightly later wing added to the north. The south front features three windows, with flush-frame sash windows containing glazing bars, and a 19th-century half-glazed door. An internal stack is present, featuring detached octagonal shafts with moulded brick bases; the original caps are missing. A later external stack is situated against the west gable. A two-storey gabled addition, set into the angle between the two ranges, contains an 18th-century cross window on the first floor. Good studding is visible internally within both wings, alongside evidence of many original windows. The main range has been altered to incorporate a 19th-century staircase. The roof of the main range has clasped and butt purlins, with arched wind-bracing; the roof of the north wing is similar, although the butt purlins are staggered.
