Description

Long Meadow is an early 16th-century three-cell open-hall house that has undergone alterations in the early 17th century and mid-20th century. The building has two storeys and is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior. It features a thatched roof with a central 17th-century chimney made of red brick, which has a distinctive sawtooth-pattern shaft. A 20th-century eyebrow casement dormer is present, along with 20th-century casements that have leaded glazing. The entrance door is also from the 20th century and is boarded, with a large suspended flat canopy that has an arcaded soffit.

This house is an unusually complete example of an open hall house, with its framing fully exposed. The two-bay hall is smoke-blackened and includes an open truss with a cambered tie-beam and an octagonal crown-post supported by two-way plank braces. There are large blocked diamond-mullioned windows in the hall, along with several others that date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The structure features close-studwork with shortened arch-type wind-bracing.

In the 17th century, the parlour was enlarged, and a chimney was constructed between the parlour and the hall, featuring arched fireplaces in both the parlour and the chamber above, as well as a lintelled opening in the hall. An upper floor was inserted into the hall and into what was previously an unfloored service cell. The parlour chamber showcases a 17th-century open truss of the arch-braced collar-beam type. To the right, a lower range, possibly a kitchen, was added in the 17th or 18th century and was largely rebuilt in the 20th century.
