Description

Elm Cottage is a house that was later divided into two dwellings. It dates from the early 17th century, and possibly even earlier, with a casing from the 19th century. The structure features a timber frame with a red brick casing and has a steeply pitched pantiled roof. The layout is a broad three-cell plan, consisting of one storey and an attic.

The front of the house has a raised four-panelled door on the left, which serves as a lobby entry, and a three-panelled door on the right, acting as a cross entry. There are 12-pane fixed casements in the centre and to the right, with red and white brick cambered heads above the openings. To the left, or parlour end, there are two 20th-century two-light casements. The building has an offset plinth, boxed eaves, and three two-light dormers.

An axial ridge stack is located to the left of centre, positioned between the hall and parlour, featuring a recessed panelled base and three conjoined diagonally set shafts with sawtooth returns. The left end has 18th-century brickwork below a rendered gable, while the right end is made of 19th-century brick and includes an attic two-light window, with exposed plates and purlins. The roof pitch has been altered at the rear. There is also a one-storey and attic wing at the rear centre. The interior has not been inspected.
