Description
Low Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, which was renovated in 1985. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a roof of concrete pantiles. The building is a three-cell, cross-entry type and stands two storeys tall. It features four mid-20th century three-light casement windows that do not have glazing bars, as well as a half-glazed door with a gabled hood from the same period. The internal stack has a plain oblong shaft, likely original to the building.
Inside, the farmhouse has been modernised, but some studding is exposed on the upper floor. The tie beam at the left gable end has mortices for large diamond mullions, and there is a cambered tie beam over the hall chamber. The hall features a ceiling with chamfered joists and a mutilated bridging beam; the muntins of a plank and muntin partition can be seen against the cross-passage. The adjacent service end was originally divided into three rooms, with a division along the bridging beam and another in the front half. The parlour includes an open fireplace that shows evidence of lining in the brick joints. The roof has been largely rebuilt in the mid-20th century. There is also a partial medieval moat surrounding the property.
