Description

Pennys Cottage is a house with a late 15th century core that underwent significant remodelling in the early 17th century. An addition to the north, which served as the parish coalhouse, was built around 1800. The cottage is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. It consists of two cells and is one and a half storeys tall, featuring various casement windows. On the west side, there is a boarded half-door and a gabled dormer. A stack is positioned against the south gable end, with a small one-storey addition from the mid-20th century beyond it. The north gable end, which faces the road, has a mid-20th century lean-to porch with a boarded half-door.

Inside, the older construction reveals a good two-bay frame with widely spaced studs and reverse-curved braces at the corners. To the west, there is a blocked doorway with a shallow pointed head, while to the east, an incomplete diamond-mullioned window extends through the current floor level. The older work shows no signs of pegged studding in the end gables, indicating it may be part of a larger structure. The upper floor dates from the early 17th century and features plain joists set flat, contemporary with the storey posts. The stack is of a similar age, although the fireplace was altered in the 18th century. The roof contains re-used coupled rafters with sporadic sooting and later side purlins.
