Description

Abbey House, formerly the rectory, was built in 1846 by S.S. Teulon. It is constructed of red brick with white brick dressings and additional black-brick embellishments. The house features a brick dentil eaves cornice and brick copings on the gables. The roof is covered with mid-20th century concrete pantiles, though it was originally plain tiled. The building has two storeys and an attic, with an irregular shape.

The entrance front (east), garden front (west), and south front each have a shaped gable with an integral stack, while the north front has a plain gable. Various sash windows with slender glazing bars and chamfered reveals are present throughout. The east and west fronts each feature two tripartite windows, with those on the ground floor set within shallow square bays topped with hipped roofs. There is a lean-to open porch with drop finials and a semi-glazed door, which has likely been altered from the original. The west front has a doorway with a three-centre arched head, and the door consists of six narrow panels, with the upper three being glazed. Above this doorway is a notable three-centre arched stair window with Y tracery and a transom, featuring decorative glazing with a pattern of linked circles.

The south front includes a ground floor canted bay with French windows, which is likely a slightly later addition. To the north, there is a square turret with a pyramidal roof that was used for W.C.s. The attic is lit by mid-20th century flush rooflights, and there was originally a gabled dormer on the east side. A contemporary lean-to and an enclosed service yard are located to the north, and there is a gateway to the east with piers topped by ball finials.

Inside, there is a well stair featuring two balusters per tread, with each pair alternately twisted and turned. Plans and specifications for the house can be found in the Parsonage House Papers at the Suffolk Record Office.
