Description
This barn, located 25 meters southeast of Cheney Farmhouse, dates from the mid to late 16th century. It is timber framed, with walls and a roof covered in corrugated iron sheeting. The barn has four bays, although a floored bay to the south has been lost. There is a cart entrance in the third bay from the north. The frame includes a middle rail, and while some studding has been lost or replaced, all three open tie beams still have their heavy braces. The roof features a king-post design, which is rare and related to the rear wing of the adjacent farmhouse. The principal rafters are shaped like crucks, curving inwards above the collar level to create straight braces to each king post. There were originally plank braces connecting the king posts to the ridge piece, but most of these are now missing. Just above the collars, there is a row of side purlins positioned against the outside of the principal rafters. The roof has been altered to a hipped form at the north end.
