Description

Suryodaya, formerly known as The Rectory, is a large house that dates back to 1791 and has been altered around 1975. It is now used as a health centre. The building is constructed of red brick and features a shallow hipped roof covered with glazed pantiles. It has a roughly square shape with a five-bay front and stands tall at two and a half storeys.

At the front, there is a plinth and steps leading up to a central entrance, which consists of six fielded panelled double doors topped with a semi-circular traceried fanlight. The entrance is framed by a doorcase with fluted pilasters and a dentilled pediment. The windows are 12-pane moulded flush frame sashes with gauged brick flat arched heads, while the attic has small six-pane sashes. A dentilled timber eaves cornice runs along the top of the building.

There are two red brick stacks with white brick dressings located on the inner slopes of the roof, which has a central valley. The returns of the building feature 20th-century single-storey additions, some of which include glazing bar sashes and casements, all with cambered heads and dentilled brick cornices at the boxed eaves. The rear of the building has three bays, with ground floor 20th-century additions, first floor glazing bar sashes, and attic six-light sashes, all with cambered heads and dentilled brick eaves.

Inside, the building has been altered but still retains two simple classical fireplaces, some cornices, panelled shutter boxes, and a butt purlin roof. Attached to the front ends are two bay 20th-century screen walls with pilaster strips and stone coping. At the rear right, there is a long L-shaped wall measuring 50 meters by 40 meters and about 3 meters high, featuring stone coping, inner pilaster strips, a segmental headed doorway, and lean-tos adjacent to the building.
