Description
Rookery Cottages is a house dating from around 1550 to 1570, with alterations made in the early to mid-20th century. The building has two storeys and features a three-cell, cross-entry plan. It is timber-framed but is completely encased in early to mid-20th century common brick. The roof is covered with Roman pantiles and was once thatched.
The house has a central chimney made of narrow red bricks, with the upper part plastered. There are various small-pane casement windows from the 20th century and panelled entrance doors, with the door on the left positioned at the cross-entry. The original 16th-century framing is heavy and intact, featuring broad studs with arch windbraces and blocked diamond mullioned windows. The first-floor joists are chamfered, and the roof structure is a queenpost design. Inside, there are back-to-back lintelled open fireplaces in both the hall and parlour.
