Description

Dassia Cottage is a house built in two stages, around 1530-1550 and in the late 16th century. It has two storeys and features four windows. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with a pantiled roof that was once thatched. There is an axial chimney made of 16th-century red brick, with the shaft rebuilt in the 20th century. The windows are mid-20th century casements, and there is a late 20th-century gabled entrance porch with a panelled door.

Inside, the hall retains high-quality features from the mid-16th century, including a double-ogee moulded binding beam and roll-moulded joists. There are two 4-centred arched service doorways, one of which has the original plank door. A complete 17th-century wainscotted cross-passage screen is also present. The roof features good queen-post construction with jowled posts and three-way bracing to square-set purlins, as well as lintel-led open back-to-back fireplaces.

In the late 16th century, the parlour cell was replaced by a second two-bay hall with a cross-entry, which has an entrance doorway with a 4-centred head and a service cell beyond. The roof at this stage was wind-braced with clasped purlins. It is possible that the earlier hall took on the role of a parlour, which is an unusual layout for a two-stage 16th-century house.
