Description
The garden wall, built in 1749 by bricklayer Robert Rodwell for the 4th Earl Dysart, is located 70 meters south-west of Helmingham Hall. Constructed of red brick in English bond, the wall features heavy gabled terracotta copings and encloses a rectangular garden measuring approximately 100 meters by 70 meters. The north-east side of the wall is open, while a screen wall spans the garden about 30 meters from this end. The main walls stand about 2.5 meters high, with square piers at each corner topped by limestone eagles. Central to the north-west and south-east walls are gateways, each flanked by a pair of similar eagles on piers, and each gateway has a wrought iron gate. The screen wall is around 2 meters high, with piers at 7-meter intervals, each topped with a limestone urn. At the center of this wall is a gateway featuring a wrought iron gate, side panels, and a crown; the heavy square piers are adorned with black winged horse's heads, which represent the Tollemache emblem. The walled garden is surrounded by a moat and is included as Grade I in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
